JIRA v4.x on Linux Administrator’s Reference

Thanks for all of the feedback on the JIRA on Linux Reference Guides. I am working on a completely revamped version of the guide which will feature a new layout, incorporation of screencasts, and a new section detailing installing and configuring JIRA  on a application server running Fedora v13 Linux.

Jim, this is an amazingly useful document for someone who has basic technical skills, but doesn’t quite know where to start with something like this. Thanks!

    Hi Jim,

I believe that I’ve been able to use your guide to get Jira installed on Sllicehost, and I’m almost there. It seems though, that I’m out of memory. I’ve only got 5MB free (on a brand new install with zero issues.) Jira mostly doesn’t respond, but will send a malformed page once in a while. This is all on a 256MB slice.

I think that I need to go with the 32-bit JDK, but am unclear of how to get there with aptitude. (I followed the Debian JDK install instructions that appear in the guide.)

I have yet to setup Postgres, I wonder if taking that step will save RAM as well.

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Roger

    Hi Roger,

I found that JIRA required a minimum of a 512MB slice, in order for it to boot successfully with no errors. Once the application I was developing for a nonprofit organization went live (more than just me as a user), I needed to tune JIRA performance a bit and also upgrade the slice to 768MB slice.

So, I would first upgrade to a 512MB slice, and then ensure that you are running the latest Jave JRE available v1.6x).

Let me know how you make out.

    Best,

    Jim
